The next Attenborough…
The old adage is true…
If the ram goes in on bonfire night, then you’ll have lambs on April fool’s day. Admittedly it was only two lambs, but it still counts!
Anyway, last week was another busy but exciting week at The Askefield Project!
The week started with Chris and Boyd continuing to work on the new log cabin on Monday. The next job on the list was to get the roof on, which was done by the end of the day and it turned out there was no room for error with exactly enough wood for the job.
As we were due to start lambing, there was no Puddlers or Toolshed last Tuesday. This meant that Tuesday was another jobs day with Chris and Ula working on getting the roof insulation onto the log cabin and Chris Sheppard came to cut the grass. Before that, however, Dawn (not Bronte) had her first lamb which created some excitement for everyone on the farm and led Chris Sheppard to showcase his finest wildlife photography skills! We then all stood around eagerly awaiting the second lamb however Dawn decided she wanted to wait until later. For the rest of the afternoon, the jobs continued and the log cabin roof was nicely insulated by the end of the day (although working with foil backed insulation in the sun had its challenges…).
Wednesday was our Care Farm Day and it was a day focussed on fencing, mainly in the top field as the grass is perfect for the sheep once lambing has finished. Chris and the clients were also sorting through wood so that Boris and Rory’s fences can be repaired, which is definitely a job for the near future as Boris thought it would be fun to sneak into the mini donkeys’ field!
Then it was Thursday and time for the next Friskney Farm School, with the Early Years, Year 1 and Year 2 coming to the farm. Last week they were looking at the lambs and the chicks and working out their needs as well as checking on the worms and building bug habitats. In the afternoon, everyone joined together for a scavenger hunt!
To finish the week, on Friday we had Challenge Askefield! Last week the craft was making pipe cleaner flowers, which was a challenge but they turned out really well in the end!
What a week!
