Time to get AUGERnised…
The new shed build got fully underway last week with work starting bright and early on Monday.
The first stage was focussed on getting a frame built for the base and so Chris and Boyd spent Monday morning measuring, cutting, chiselling and screwing the timbers together. Soon enough, the frame was ready to be put in place and reinforced with some plywood squares on the corners. The next stage of the process was all about securing the frame in the ground. After some careful marking, the frame lifting out of the way, and some guide holes had been made, it was time to break out the Auger. Very shortly after, there were 8 holes ready for concrete and allthread. Whilst the holes were being made, Boyd had been busy cutting the allthread into the lengths needed to go in the holes. However, disaster struck…
…disaster is a strong word, in actual fact the nuts for securing the allthread were just too small and so a Screwfix trip was needed before the concrete could go in, which meant a break in the shed building until Tuesday. On Monday afternoon, we had Mind come to The Askefield Project to deliver their Stop Suicide course to staff and volunteers.
Tuesday was another shed building day with Chris drilling holes in the frame for the allthread and then concreting them in the ground to make sure there was a good strong base ready for the shed to be fixed to.
Then it was Wednesday, which was our Care Farm Day AND Hannah’s Birthday! At the farm, the first job of the day for Chris and the clients was (as usual) to feed the animals and after they were all sorted and happy, it was time to get back on with the shed. The main focus for Wednesday was getting the membrane and gravel down and making sure the floor was level, which by mid-afternoon had been very definitely achieved and the frame was now ready to be securely bolted down. The shed had been going brilliant thanks to all of the hard work from Chris, Boyd and our Care Farm Clients!
On Thursday we had our next Farm School Day, with the year 3 and 4s coming back for their second time. This time they were investigating digestive systems and looked at the differences between those in humans and animals as well as the differences in food and intestine lengths. They were also able to investigate owl pellets and identify what was in the owl’s diet, a very exciting activity indeed!
And finally, Friday…
…which meant it was Challenge Askefield; it was a lovely morning with lots of crafting, chatting, cake and this time the craft was needle felting!
It has been another busy but brilliant week at The Askefield Project!
